The Home Manicure Guide

The Nail Prep Checklist

Practical, beginner-friendly guidance for a cleaner, more controlled at-home manicure routine.

Gather clean tools

Have your files, cuticle tools, wipes and products ready before you begin.

Remove old product safely

Do not peel or force product from the nail.

Trim and shape

Create the desired length and shape before gel application.

Push back and clean the cuticle area

Remove non-living tissue from the nail plate and around the cuticle area.

Refine only as needed

Use an appropriate file or buffer for your system and avoid unnecessary natural-nail thinning.

Cleanse thoroughly

Remove all dust and surface oils before product application.

Apply and cure as directed

Follow the instructions for your base product, gel system and lamp.

Important: Product systems differ. Follow the instructions for the specific gel, lamp, remover and tools you use.

For the difference between common manual cuticle tools, see our guide to pushers, nippers and scissors.
