Nail File Grit Explained

Practical, beginner-friendly guidance for a cleaner, more controlled at-home manicure routine.

80 grit

Very coarse. Generally reserved for heavy artificial product work, not routine natural-nail filing.

100 grit

Coarse and commonly used on artificial enhancements.

150 grit

Medium-coarse. Suitability depends on the task, product and technique.

180 grit

Commonly used for shaping and refining enhancements and for some natural-nail tasks when appropriate.

240 grit

Finer and often preferred for gentler natural-nail shaping or refinement.

Remember

Pressure, tool quality and technique matter as much as the number printed on the file.

Important: Product systems differ. Follow the instructions for the specific gel, lamp, remover and tools you use.

If you are filing natural nails rather than choosing an abrasive for enhancement work, see our guide to shaping natural nails without over-filing.
