How to Remove Soak-Off Gel Polish at Home

Practical, beginner-friendly guidance for a cleaner, more controlled at-home manicure routine.

Confirm it is a soak-off product

Hard gel and some builder products may not dissolve in acetone.

Reduce the glossy top layer

Gently file the surface enough to help remover penetrate, without filing into the natural nail.

Apply acetone-soaked cotton

Place saturated cotton directly over the gel and secure it with foil or suitable clips.

Allow the product to soften

Follow the manufacturer’s removal guidance because soak times can vary.

Remove only loosened product

Use a pusher or orangewood stick gently. If the gel resists, re-wrap rather than forcing it.

Refine remaining residue carefully

Avoid over-buffing or thinning the natural nail.

Finish with cuticle oil

Wash the hands and moisturize the surrounding skin after removal.

Important: Product systems differ. Follow the instructions for the specific gel, lamp, remover and tools you use.
